Searching TIPs

To search for contents within a journal title only available in print, click the title of the journal listed on the Philosophy Documentation Center site.* Then search chosen keywords to search within that journal title. When you find an article that interests you, check the catalog for holdings of that particular volume and issue available in the library. *If not listed with the Philosophy Documentation Center find the journal's website for an index of the journal's contents
It is most important to first have an idea of what subject one would need to find articles on. Once a topic is developed, choose relevant keywords that reflect the language used to describe the topic. Then search your chosen database or the library catalog.

Journal Articles

There are various ways to find journal articles on your topic.

Individual articles are indexed in databases such as PhilPapers or Ebscohost.
If an article is unavailable digitally in a database, you will often be able to find the article in print through the catalog or you may be able to request it through interlibrary loan.
Making an interlibrary loan request is a simple process. Fill out the linked form (after logging in with your id number and name) and your article will come to you digitally in as soon as a couple days.

Ancient Philosophy is a peer-reviewed journal devoted to the publication of original articles, discussions, and reviews in ancient Greek and Roman philosophy and science. Since 1980 it has been an essential source of excellent scholarship in its field.
International Philosophical Quarterly : IPQ

Since 1961 International Philosophical Quarterly has provided a peer-reviewed forum in English for the international exchange of basic philosophical ideas. The journal stands in the general tradition of theistic and personalist humanism without further restriction of school or philosophical orientation, and is open to the philosophical discussion of contemporary issues and historical studies.

JHI defines intellectual history expansively and ecumenically, including the histories of philosophy, of literature and the arts, of the natural and social sciences, of religion, and of political thought.

ournal of the History of Philosophy (JHP) is an international journal that publishes articles, notes, discussions, and reviews about the history of Western philosophy, broadly conceived. JHP takes its mandate from a motion passed by the Eastern Division of the American Philosophical Association in December 1957 approving "the establishment of a journal devoted to the history of philosophy." Each issue includes refereed articles on topics ranging from ancient and medieval to nineteenth- and twentieth-century philosophy as well as book reviews.
Res Philosophica

Res Philosophica is an international, quarterly journal of philosophy that publishes research in all areas of philosophy, historical and topical. Founded as The Modern Schoolman by Jesuit Scholastics in 1925, this peer-reviewed journal is edited by members of the Philosophy Department at Saint Louis University.
The Thomist

The Thomist appeals to a wide international readership in the university, the seminary, and the Church. In the tradition and spirit of Thomas Aquinas, it seeks to promote original and penetrating inquiry into the full range of contemporary philosophical and theological questions. It undertakes particularly to support sustained discussion of issues of philosophy and systematic theology, where such discussion can be advanced by creative use of the thought of Aquinas and significant authors in the Thomistic tradition. In this way The Thomist seeks to cultivate a fruitful dialogue between modern and contemporary philosophical systems and the classical tradition of philosophy and Christian theology.
